Under his leadership, Texas Health and its membership organizations received numerous awards, with several hospitals nationally recognized for clinical excellence. Twice, the American Hospital Association presented Texas Health with the coveted NOVA award for outstanding community service.

Beyond his work with Texas Health, Mr. Hawthorne is a dedicated philanthropist and volunteer, known for his commitment to diversity and community service. He and his wife helped establish and fund the Open Arms health clinic in Tanzania, for which they were honored by Empower African Children. The clinic opened in June 2011, with 358 patients treated by their team of health professionals in just three days. Open Arms continues to thrive, with a physician and a nurse treating patients daily.

Mr. Hawthorne has served on an impressive list of boards and committees. For example, he is the Immediate Past Chair of Trinity University Board of Trustees, a Lifetime Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a member of the American Hospital Association’s President’s Forum. His list of professional, civic, and community positions includes numerous past and present memberships with prestigious organizations. He has been mentioned nine times in Modern Healthcare magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in Health Care” list and was named among the “HealthLeaders 20” in 2013. In 2014, he was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame and honored with lifetime achievement awards by both Fort Worth Business Press, Healthcare Heroes and D CEO, Excellence in Healthcare. Most recently, he received the 2017 Graivier Award from March of Dimes.
